Fehu is the first rune of the Elder Futhark and belongs to the First Aett, traditionally associated with the god Freyr. It is represented by the phonetic sound “F” and visually resembles an upward-branching symbol, like two horns or branches reaching out from a vertical line. Fehu’s name is generally translated as “cattle” or “wealth,” a reflection of its significance in early Germanic society where livestock represented prosperity, social status, and mobility.
In its historical context, Fehu denoted tangible, mobile wealth – not just cattle, but anything that could be traded or passed on. It conveyed a sense of abundance that was active and flowing, wealth that moved through the hands of communities and individuals. This concept of moveable wealth tied Fehu directly to generosity, responsibility, and exchange.
Symbolically, Fehu represents beginnings, potential, nourishment, and financial or material gain. It is a rune of creation and manifestation, often associated with fertility and the drive to build or secure resources. It carries the energy of ambition, motivation, and the power of possession, but it also carries a warning: the accumulation of wealth must be tempered with fairness and generosity, or it becomes a source of conflict and stagnation.
In modern interpretation and rune readings, Fehu can suggest new financial opportunities, successful ventures, or the reward of efforts. Spiritually, it may indicate a time of growth, initiation, or the chance to channel energy into productive creation. Reversed or in a challenging position, Fehu might hint at loss, greed, instability, or dependency on material things.
Fehu’s presence is a reminder of both the blessing and burden of wealth – to value not only what you own but also how you share it and use it. Its placement at the start of the Elder Futhark signals that all journeys begin with potential and the resources we choose to harness.
