Gebo Rune

Gebo is the seventh rune of the Elder Futhark and is closely associated with the concepts of gift, generosity and exchange. Its name translates directly as “gift” and it embodies the idea of balance between giving and receiving. In the Germanic and Norse world view, the act of giving was never a one-sided gesture but part of a sacred cycle of reciprocity that bound communities, families and individuals together. Gifts were not only physical objects but could also be friendship, loyalty, or oaths. The rune reflects this vital principle that relationships are sustained through equal exchange and mutual respect.

The symbol of Gebo resembles a simple cross, formed by two lines meeting in the centre. This imagery reinforces its meaning of balance and connection, two sides coming together in harmony. It is often interpreted as the meeting point between human and divine or between two people who enter into a bond of trust and shared responsibility.

In rune readings Gebo often points towards partnerships, alliances and contracts. It may indicate that a gift or opportunity is forthcoming, but it also highlights the importance of fairness in any dealings. When it appears, it can be a reminder that generosity should be freely given, not used as leverage, and that one should remain open to receive in return. It is a rune of equality where both sides benefit, whether in business, love or friendship.

Spiritually, Gebo carries the message of balance between the self and higher powers. In ancient practice, offerings to the gods were not seen as mere sacrifice but as part of this reciprocal exchange, where humans honoured the divine and in return sought blessing and protection. The rune therefore symbolises the sacred bond between mortal and divine, as well as the enduring value of generosity in human relationships.

Phonetically, Gebo represents the “g” sound. Its symbolism combines themes of harmony, fairness, connection and unity. It encourages awareness of how our actions affect others and reminds us that true strength in a community or relationship comes from the willingness to give without expectation and to receive with gratitude.
