Algiz is the fifteenth rune of the Elder Futhark and the seventh in the second aett. Its phonetic value is “Z” or sometimes “R” in later traditions, and its literal meaning is often given as “elk” or “protection”. Algiz is a powerful rune of defence, sanctuary, and connection with higher spiritual awareness.
The elk, with its antlers held high, was seen as a creature of strength and alertness, able to sense danger and defend itself. In the same way, Algiz symbolises protection, both physical and spiritual. It is a rune of guardianship, offering safety from harm while also demanding vigilance and responsibility.
Symbolically, Algiz represents shielding, defence, and the protective instincts that guard life. It is also connected to communication with the divine, as the outstretched shape of the rune resembles a figure with arms raised in invocation. In this sense, it acts as a bridge between human beings and higher powers, strengthening intuition and awareness.
In divination, Algiz often indicates protection, guidance, or a warning to stay alert. It may suggest that help is at hand, or that the seeker is under spiritual or ancestral protection. At the same time, it can serve as a reminder to maintain boundaries and remain cautious in the face of potential threats.
The form of the rune, with its upright line and branching arms, is associated with antlers, the tree of life, or the stance of a person in prayer or defence. It carries imagery of both natural strength and spiritual elevation.
Algiz is sometimes connected with Heimdall, the ever-watchful guardian of the gods, whose vigilance protects Asgard from danger. Through this association, the rune embodies awareness, foresight, and the power of guardianship.
Algiz ultimately teaches that protection is not passive but active. It is a rune of strength through awareness, urging the seeker to guard what is valuable, to respect boundaries, and to trust in the support of higher powers.
